A convenient roadway for cross-country ventures
If there's any time of the year that's meant for a road trip from coast to coast, it's definitely between the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Although veering from major highways to see some of the countryside is something every driver should consider, many families would rather take the speediest and most convenient route to reach their final destination.
If you're planning a drive through the center of the country, Interstate 40 is perhaps your most reliable option. Extending from Wilmington, North Carolina, to Barstow, California, Interstate 40 follows the traditional Route 66 practically the whole way - leaving plenty of landmarks and historical sites for adventurous motorists to experience. Even though it's perhaps one of the most accessible roads in the United States, the traffic is relatively smooth throughout most of it. Urban areas like Raleigh, Memphis and Oklahoma City might receive higher volumes of cars during the summer - but for the most part, the road is incredibly safe.
Interstate 40 is also one of the best-maintained roads in the country, making it a smooth drive as far as construction goes. For those who want to get to Los Angeles or the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, Interstate 40 is likely the best possible route.
