Driving in windy conditions is among the essential car care tips that every driver should know. Whether you live in Chicago or Boston, you may encounter high gusts while you're on the road.
Start off by reducing your speed. Beware of any branches or trees that may fall onto the road. Driving slowly can reduce impact when hitting any unexpected debris.
Pay careful attention to any trucks, buses or vehicles towing trailers, as they are among the most susceptible to being blown off course by the wind. Always keep both hands on the wheel to make sure you have as much control as possible.
If high winds turn into a tornado, seek shelter - don't try to drive faster than the cyclone in your car. If there is no shelter nearby, exit your vehicle and find a ditch (or other low-lying location) to stay in until it is safe.
If you are in your home and know there is a tornado in the area, don't get in your car. Wait until conditions have returned to normal.
