Carefree Car Ownership
Steps to take in the event of an accident
Accidents can happen to even the most educated and cautious of drivers. The road is full of unexpected variables and unpredictable situations, so it's always best to be prepared. Here are some car safety tips to ensure you handle an accident's aftermath as best as possible.
Check for injuries
First and foremost, it's important to make sure you and your passengers are all okay before doing anything else. Take a deep breath and check for potential injuries. If you find one, call an ambulance and don't move.
Assess the damage
Assuming that everyone is fine, the next step is to inspect your car. Walk around the exterior of your vehicle and make a note of every affected area. Keep a disposable camera and notepad handy to ensure an accurate record. If you can, drive your vehicle to the side of the road and out of traffic.
Report it
Even in a minor accident, calling the police will ensure that the no laws are broken. Exchange insurance information with the other driver(s) and inform your insurance agent of the accident – they can provide you with details about how to proceed.
