Pulling to the side of the highway
Highways are designed for quick and simple one-direction driving. However, highways can pose significant dangers, especially when a driver needs to pull to the side of the road due to engine trouble. Here are some car safety tips for proper procedures for pulling off the highway.
Signal
At the first sign of engine difficulties, you should immediately use your right blinker to signal that you need to pull on to the shoulder. Maintain control of your vehicle without panicking and slowly and deliberately shift lanes until you reach the side of the road. Once you've parked the vehicle, engage your hazard lights.
Exit carefully
If you're forced to pull over on a high traffic area of the road, you should exercise caution when exiting your vehicle. Check your mirrors to find an appropriate time to leave your vehicle and make sure that your door doesn't extend into the highway. If there's too much traffic to exit safely, slide over to the passenger seat and use that door.
Markers
While you're inspecting your car or waiting for a tow truck or emergency vehicle to arrive, place orange safety cones around the area. This will alert other drivers to remain alert for pedestrians on the side of the highway - which is especially important at night. You can find these markers at most automotive stores or major retailers. Make sure you keep these markers in the emergency kit in your vehicle at all times.
