Many parts of the road can prove to be tricky or dangerous for unwary drivers. In particular, a great number of accidents and car crashes occur at intersections - whether they have a stop sign, traffic light or no signal at all. Here are some car travel tips and car safety tips on three common mistakes that can spell disaster at an intersection.
Yellow light
One of the biggest make or break moments for any driver occurs at the onset of a yellow traffic light, according to the Federal Highway Administration. This yellow signal "dilemma zone" is the point where drivers must decide whether it's safer to continue through the intersection or stop. Unfortunately, too many drivers see the yellow light as a signal to speed up, rather than slow down - the cause of many avoidable car accidents. By obeying posted speed limits, you'll greatly improve your chances of stopping safely.
Right of way
At four-way stop intersections, drivers are often confused about who has the right of way. The basic practice for yielding right of way is based around which car arrives there first. In a situation where more than one car stops at approximately the same time, always allow the car to your right to go first.
Wrong lane
When making a turn, ensure that you remain in the same lane as you started. Switching to another lane mid-turn can confuse drivers around you and cause a potential traffic jam.
